One of the most humorous childhood stories I've heard is one from a friend who is not ashamed of that part of her childhood which she said was the extreme example of poverty.
Her parents were very poor and there were 8 of them to be fed in the family. The mother stayed at home to do all the household chores while her father had no permanent but was doing odd jobs in the neighborhood cutting or trimming the hair of people who could not afford to go to a formal hair salon, and at times her father would go fishing for the family's consumption and also to have some extra money from the sales of the fish he caught which again he'd sell to their neighbors. She narrated how they managed several times to eat only once a day.
Her funny recollection of her childhood goes back to Grade 1 when her classmates would tease her on days that she went to school without any panty on. Yes, she had only one panty which her mother scheduled to wash every other day. So on those days her only undergarment was scheduled to be washed she'd have to go to school without one! Her greatest humiliation came when they had their PE class. They had a game like they were supposed to jump over a rope held on both ends by two classmates. When it was her turn, her classmates were all watching her do the move and when she did and fell on her butt, this caused guffaws from all her classmates who knew beforehand that it was her no-panty day.
She vowed to have stocks of lingeries when she'd become rich. True enough, this woman now successfully owns her own business, a beauty salon, and she told me that she has a closet full of unused undergarments. That single childhood experience made her stock up on all sorts of undergarments. What for, I asked her. And she said, just in case I have visitors who forget to bring some.
